Nails – You Will Never Be One Of Us

Death-grind machine Nails’ latest, ‘You Will Never Be One Of Us’, is a brisk, twenty-one minute cauldron of sonic extremity so crammed full of rage that it threatens to boil over. Each of the album’s ten tracks forms a swirling vortex of filthy guitar tone, barbaric rhythms and flame-thrower vocals. With little variety or transitional delays between tracks, the record rips along with relentless velocity, feeling something like a speeding train headed for inevitable collision. The unstoppable violence of Nails is in its purest form here, stripped down, raw, and fantastically brutal.

The riffs are grinding, furious power chord concoctions focusing more on sheer speed and fury than technicality or musicality, locking in with the battering rhythms to create an explosive expression of vicious anger that is as effective as it is straightforward. Songs rarely last much more than a minute and a half, with the exception the fifth track, ‘Violence is Forever’, and the eight minute closing track, ‘They Come Crawling Back’. The former is a churning, noisy hate anthem, sure to be a particularly visceral track in live performances. The final song, though stretching out for much longer than the previous tracks, refuses to loosen its grip, so that there is no loss in consistency. Rather, the extended length serves to hammer in the nail (no pun intended) with a series of sadistic sledgehammer riffs and breakdowns.

‘You Will Never Be One Of Us’ is a demented slaughterhouse of punky, extreme metal savagery, in focused, concentrated form. Set for release June 17th under Nuclear Blast Records, this record sets a terrifying new standard for the American grind band.
