Under the Spotlight - Andrew Warner
An ambitious DIY musician, Andrew Warner was born on the border of North Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and South Yorkshire, and now lives in Manchester. His music blends indie pop with twinges of folk and rock, resulting in an interesting and catchy variety of songs, with lyrical content ranging from more literal social commentary to meaningful metaphorical musing!
In addition, Andrew selects unusual covers during his performances, putting his own spin on them, which surprises and thoroughly entertains the crowd alongside his originals. He loves having a good back and forth with the audience, and is not one for staying quiet between songs.
Don’t let the recorded tracks fool you into thinking Andrew can’t bring it acoustically. He makes up for a lack of his instruments with vocalised hooks and audience engagement!

Ballad of the Mighty I – Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds
Pass it On – The Coral

Arctic Monkeys
Oasis
Muse
Interpol
Red Hot Chili Peppers
What is the best gig you’ve ever played?
My EP launch at MONO in Chorlton – a room full of people singing my own songs back at me! Everyone was cool, and there were people I didn’t know who’d come simply because they’d seen me perform elsewhere. It felt amazing that some were there because they wanted to see me play!
Name one underground/unsigned band that deserves to make it?
Go listen to ‘Maybe Frank’ – they’re an amazing duo! Both good lads too!
What is your favourite thing about being in the music industry?
Made so many new friends. It’s also really cool that you can go to play gigs in other cities and see there are things like CDs, stickers or markings of other acts you already know! We’re all doing the same thing and trying to branch out!
TV / Film / Literature
What are your top 5 favourite television shows of all time?
Hmm, I do like a fair few shows, but how about:
Dragonball (and Dragonball Z) – these are amazing, end of. If you haven’t watched, go watch them!
The Simpsons (until about season 14 – then it started feeling like they were really scraping the bottom of the barrel!)
Scrubs (after season 3 it got a little bit lame, but still watchable. Not like that garbage that was season 9!)
Doctor Who – To be honest, I’ve only really watched the newer ones, starting from Eccleston. As I write this I realise I missed the new series of Capaldi, ugh.
Game of Thrones – who doesn’t like every main character kicking the bucket?
What are you watching at the moment?
Going through the Dragonball series again. Dragonball Z was a big part of my childhood but I’d never watched the original Dragonball series until recently.
What is your favourite line/speech in a film/TV Show?
‘And this….this is what it’s like..to go..even further BEYOND. AAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!’ – Goku going Super Saiyan 3 for the first time in Dragonball Z.
Which fictional character would you most like to date?
When I was younger I thought Sabrina the Teenage Witch was pretty decent. But I’d be jealous she could do magic and I couldn’t. But still, let’s go with Sabrina – assuming we’re both age appropriate now. I’m now much older than that character!
If you could be any fictional character, who would you choose?
It’s all about Goku or Gohan. Who doesn’t want to be a Super Saiyan?! If you don’t know what a Super Saiyan
What are you reading at the moment/last book you read?
Does a Beano annual count as something I’ve read? Because that’s the last thing I read other than chemistry journals. I guess if you’re talking actual books, I’ve started reading the Game of Thrones series after watching all of the show!
Personality
Name one of your favourite quotes?
Other than saying something is ‘rate good’, I guess an actual quotation I use to describe my talking is that ‘I have too much to say and not enough time to say it in’
What/who would you throw in Room 101?
People who complain about their situation, and do NOTHING to rectify it. They’re just unmotivated and want any excuse not to put the work in!
Describe yourself in 1-5 words?
I’m an ambitious, determined individual!
You can choose your last meal. What will the menu consist of?
Soup. Tomato and Basil
Pizza. Meat feast pizza with stuffed crust. Preferably stuffed with cheese and hotdog.
Chocolate flapjack and vanilla ice-cream
What place would you like to visit that you haven’t already?
Just saying the US would be a bit vague. I watched Man v Food and therefore I want to go and eat those delicious looking (and horrifically bad for you) foods!
What’s been your favourite holiday?
Anywhere I’ve been active for most of it! Been snowboarding in Andorra and France which was amazing! Hoping to get on the slopes again this Christmas!
What’s your first drink on a night out?
Probably Crabbies Alcoholic Ginger Beer if it’s available!
What’s your last drink on a night out?
Water. I don’t do hangovers!
Hypothetical
What superpower would you have for one day?
Flying – who doesn’t wish they could fly?! Also see back to my answers about Dragonball Z, they can all fly – and shoot energy beams.
What’s the first thing you would do if you won the lottery?
I’d buy my parents big houses, cars and things they deserved. They support me when I need it, and if I had the chance to return the favour, I’d do it in an instant.
What one item would you take with you on a desert island?
Definitely a musical instrument. Likely my guitar! You can really spend hours just happily playing away!
If you could know the answer to any question, besides “What is the meaning of life?” what would it be?
What are next week’s lottery numbers? That’d be good to know ta! That way I can actually put the lottery question into action!
If you could go back in time, what is one piece of advice you would give your younger self?
I’d tell him not to bother obsessing over this one lass through secondary school, because it took her ten years to realise how decent he was, and that he was better than that. I’d also assure him that his bad skin complexion will clear up about age 19 and that starting running for exercise is the best thing he could do to change himself. I may tell him to take it easy though, as now I have 55 year old knees that creak and crack!
Inside the ‘Pure Studio’
What is your favourite word?
I know at one point my favourite word was definitely ‘snausage’. Yes with the n!
What is your least favourite word?
Mmm, the C word. Not a massive fan of that.
What switches you on?
Sunny days that are brisk. They’re amazing. Not too cold, but enough to wear a jacket comfortably. Makes you appreciate the warmth of a shop, your house, your car. The skies are blue, not a cloud in sight. Everything just looks great washed in sunlight. Then you get in and have a brew in the garden. It’s all good.
What switches you off?
Rain…and wind…and cold. All together at once. I hate it when it’s raining sideways!
What sound or noise do you love?
Cliché, but on those sunny days there’s nothing better than hearing birds chirping and a river running. They’re just relaxing sounds that make me happy to be here!
What sound or noise do you hate?
When I’m trying to sleep and you can hear next door pumping their horrific drum and bass music through their bargain bin bass speaker so you just hear that rumbling. My brain then latches onto it and I can’t sleep!
What is your favourite curse word?
Not sure how young the viewers of this website will be. So as it’s before the watershed, it’s the F word.
What profession other than your own would you like to attempt?
I’m a chemist and a musician. I’d wanna do personal training if anything else! Keeping active is another passion of mine!
What profession would you not like to do?
Hmm. Imagine being that guy on the M25 Dartford tunnel toll bridge. That would be horrifically boring, anti-social, monotonous. I’d hate doing that.
If heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the pearly gates?
Hey man, you’ve done alright. Here’re the keys to your cloud mansion. Pool’s over there, gym’s over there, buffet is over there, have a good one! If anything, heaven is just gonna be a cruise ship by what I just described.
