Under The Spotlight - Matt Fryers

Matt Fryers is one of the most soulful and naturally gifted acoustic singer/songwriters circling the underground scene at the moment. His range and powerful gritty vocals coupled with his passionate and dynamic guitar playing has had audiences memorised whenever he plays.

With recent slots at ‘Headlander’ and ‘The Hidden Beer Festival’ in Stockport, Matt will be playing Blackthorn Music Festival on Saturday 25th July, which will be another chance to see why he’s so highly regarded.

He will be in the Pure Studio on 17th July on show no. 75 for live session and interview, but he spoke to Sonic Bandwagon beforehand in the ‘Under the Spotlight’ feature, telling us what the best gig he’s ever played was, what inventive product he’d take with him on a desert island, what he’d throw in Room 101, and what he’d do if he won the lottery.

MUSIC

What are your top 5 favourite songs? In no particular order because I can’t decide……….Tool – ‘Right in Two’, Metallica – ‘Nothing Else Matters’, Oasis - ‘Fade in Out’, The Cinematic Orchestra – ‘To Build a Home’, and James Vincent McMorrow – ‘Down The Burning Ropes’

What is your favourite song lyric? “Life is a lesson. You learn it when you’re through”. Limp Bizkit - ‘Take a Look Around’

What is the best gig you’ve ever played? Last year I was part of a release from Scruff of The Neck Records, `Mix Tape Vol. 1`. There was me and four bands. We all recorded our tracks over the same weekend and got to know each other pretty well in the process. As a result the launch night was amazing. Night and Day was completely packed out and everybody joined together to make the most awesome night I’ve ever had the pleasure of playing at. And I got very very drunk on whiskey.

What is your favourite thing about being in the music industry? Getting to meet and jam with so many talented musicians.

What has been the best gig you’ve attended? A Papa Roach gig I went to many years ago. The gig itself wasn’t that amazing, but near the end I crowd surfed from the back of the crowd to the front and over the security barrier. Can’t really top that.

MattFryers2TV/FILM/LITERATURE

What are your top 5 favourite films? If I really had to pick five out of the hundreds of films that I love, they would probably be…….. Pulp Fiction, Snatch, Mad Max (any of the 3 that don’t have Tina Turner in them), Bronson, and Falling Down.

Who would you want to play you in a movie of your life? Tom Hardy

What would you name the autobiography of your life? ‘Shit Happens’

PERSONALITY

What is your biggest fear? Spiders!!! I don’t care if they’re more scared of me than I am of them!!!

What/who would you throw in Room 101? Skinny jeans. I am pretty sure that in the future we will find out that skinny jeans have a negative effect on mans ability to reproduce!!!

Who is your hero/idol? My dad. He was without a doubt the greatest person I’ve ever known.

You can choose your last meal. What will the menu consist of? Steak!!! Don’t care what else there is just as long as there is steak!!!

What makes you laugh the most? Complete stupidity

MattFryers3HYPOTHETICAL
